Setting Goals for Race Day Expectations

There are two kinds of goals that should be set for race day. The first kind are outcome goals: the pace you want to maintain, a finishing time that you want to achieve, etc. The second kind may be more important: the process goals you want to achieve. Examples of process goals are things like smiling throughout the race, remembering to encourage others as you pass them or they pass you, thanking volunteers along the course, remembering to drink at the rest stops or on a certain schedule, etc. Both kinds of goals are important. And, no matter what your goals, there should always be SOMETHING you learn from the experience.
