Resting is NOT a Weakness

In our hard driving world, rest is often seen as a weakness, something done only when everything else is done. But, rest is when we become stronger, especially if it follows periods of relentless activity or training. Americans (and endurance athletes!!) in particular seem to think rest is something done when we’re old, very sick or injured or extremely lazy. On average the typical American takes a 1 or 2 week vacation annually. The average European or Australian takes 4-6 weeks or more!! We might think our work ethic makes us more productive (and possibly faster athletes) but this is not supported by research. The best productivity in the office and on the field comes when we are well-trained, well-rested, and happy with our work/activity. Perhaps it’s time for a break….
